Shoulder arthroscopy (Belarus, Minsk)

Shoulder arthroscopy

Shoulder arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgery performed for a diagnostic examination and treatment of damage to the structures of the shoulder joint. This operation allows the surgeon to visually inspect the articular surfaces of the humerus and scapula, the labrum of the glenoid, intraarticular tendons and ligaments, the synovial membrane of the joint.

Shoulder arthroscopy is performed through several small skin incisions (punctures) for introducing a camera and instruments.

The indications for this type of surgery are various injuries and diseases of the joint, such as labrum tears, rotator cuff tears, tendon lesions, shoulder dislocations and subluxations, loose bodies in the joint cavity, etc.

Arthroscopy of the shoulder joint has several advantages compared with open shoulder surgery:

  • minimal invasiveness (small operational approaches 4-5 mm.);
  • fewer complications after surgery;
  • possibility of early rehabilitation.

Arthroscopic interventions on the structures of the shoulder joint are indicated in:

  • shoulder pain with movements or at rest, not reducing after taking painkillers;
  • restriction of ROM (impossibility to elevate the humerus, to wrap it behind the head or back) due to pain or weakness of the muscles of the shoulder girdle, occasional dislocations in the joint;
  • painful clicks in the joint.

The following surgical interventions are performed on the shoulder joint with the use of arthroscopic technique in the Center for Traumatology and Orthopedics:

  • chondroplasty in case cartilaginous lesions of the humeral head and the glenoid;
  • partial synovectomy for the synovitis of the shoulder joint;
  • glenoid labrum repair (Bankart surgery) in recurrent shoulder dislocations, Weber-Saha surgery in Hill-Sachs lesions and significant bony defects of the humeral head, as well as Boychev and Bristow-Latarjet tendon-muscular transposition;
  • remplissage;
  • cold plasma ablation in cases of subluxation and diseases of the synovial membrane;
  • subacromial decompression in subacromial impingement syndrome and bursitis;
  • selective capsulotomy in the "frozen shoulder" syndrome;
  • rotator cuff repair using suture anchors.
